Emma Weekley (c) 2007 Published Monday 24th September, 2007 On August 9, PricewaterhouseCoopers released a report for the quarter ended June 2007 on behalf of the Interactive Advertising Bureau Australia (IAB).
Total market expenditure in the internet advertising industry has seen a relatively consistent yearly rise in total expenditure since 2003, the first year of record keeping of online advertising expenditures. As the figure below illustrates, annual expenditure has increased by more than $1b in the last five years. 
A summary of findings are outlined briefly below:
Online Advertising Expenditure for 3 months ended 30 June 2007
- Largest second quarter recorded - 325.5m; Up $31.5m (or 10.7%) from the first-quarter of 2007 and $99.5m (or 44%) on the second quarter 2006
- Category share: general advertising (28%), classifieds advertising (27%), search and directories (45%)
- Dominant industries using General Display advertising (comprising 54% General Display expenditure)
- Dominant industries using Classified Advertising expenditure was recruitment, followed by real estate and automotive
Online Advertising Expenditure for 6 months ended 30 June 2007
- 619.5m; up $39.5m (or 6.8%) from the 6 months ended 31 December 2006, and $198.5m (47.1%) from the 6 months ended 30 June 2006
- Strong growth in all expenditure types; Search and directories (46% share), general and classifieds advertising (27% share) based on expenditure for the 6 months.
- Highest spending Advertiser Industry category in General Advertising: Finance
- Highest spending Advertiser Industry category for Classifieds Advertising: Recruitment
Online Advertising Expenditure for 12 months ended 30 June 2007
- $1,199.5m; up $421.5m (54.2%) from 12 months ended 30 June 2006
- strong growth in all expenditure types; General Advertising (29%), Classifieds Advertising (28%) and Search and directories (43%) based on expenditure for the 12 months.
- Highest spending Advertiser Industry category in General Advertising: Finance
- Highest spending Advertiser Industry category for Classifieds Advertising: Recruitment.

Moreover, although expenditure in the General and Classifieds advertising has increased substantially since 2003, a great majority of growth in this industry is attributed to and driven by a dramatic increase in Search and Directories advertising expenditure.
